Silicosis Prevention
Silica: What it is
- Silica is a basic component of soil, granite, sand, and most types of rocks.
- Silica is also used as a blasting agent.
- Silica injuries can remain idle for up to 15 years after exposure.
The Dangers
- Silica particles can reach the deepest parts of the lungs.
- Exposure to silica can cause breathing difficulties.
- Long term exposure can cause silicosis, an often fatal lung disease.
Prevention
- Be aware of dust levels.
- Always use blasting cabinets and exhaust ventilation.
- Use water to remove dust.
- Use vacuums with high efficiency filters.
- Do not use compressed air to clean dust.
- Remove dust by wet sweeping.
- Use non-crystalline silica blasting materials.
- Use absorbents without silica.
- Use a dust suppression system when available.
- Use saws that provide water to the blade when sawing concrete and other masonry.
- When drilling rocks and other masonry materials, use water through the drill stem to reduce the amount of dust.
- Wear a respirator and other PPE approved protection.
- Never eat, drink, or smoke around silica dust.
