Machine Fires
Ensure you are Prepared
- Walk around the machine to check for possible fire hazards before starting up the vehicle.
- Regularly check that fire extinguishers, fire alert systems, and suppression systems are in working order.
- Remove waste from all heat sources.
- Shut off the machine when leaving it for any period of time.
- Be alert for fires on, and inside the machine.
- Stop the engine when refueling.
- Regularly check for fluid leaks.
- Never smoke when flammable fluids are near you.
If you have a fire:
- Stop the vehicle immediately and in the safest manner.
- Shift to neutral.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine.
- If applicable, activate the fire suppression system.
- Get out of the cab.
- Call for help.
- Assess the situation.
- If the fire is small enough to put out with a fire extinguisher you may try to do so, however, if you feel the fire is out of control, get away from the machine as quickly as possible.
