Hearing Protection
Continuous exposure to loud noise damages the cells and nerves of the inner ear, and if enough cells are damaged, permanent hearing loss may result.
Prevention
- When exposed to loud noise for an ongoing period of time, wear earplugs.
- Reduce your exposure to loud noise outside of the workplace.
- Use sound absorbing materials.
- Do not use more than one noisy machine at a time.
- Do not try to drown out unwanted noise with another sound.
- Have your hearing tested annually.
Selection of the right protection depends on these factors:
- The loudness of the noise you will be working with as a measure in decibels.
- The length of time you will be exposed to the noise.
- If the noise is generated from one or multiple sources.
Types of Protection
- Single-Use Earplugs
- Self forming plugs that mould to your ears.
- Molded Earplugs
- Individually fitted and can be disposable or re-useable.
- Earmuffs
- Need a perfect seal around the ear.
