Fall Protection
Be Aware
- Take notice of all tripping and falling hazards before working, such as floor opening or edges, shafts, skylights, stairwells, roof openings, cords, and air hoses.
- Do not jump from any height.
Fall Arrest Systems
What is it?
- A way of preventing someone from falling.
- Often, a full harness fall arrest system is worn to distribute pressure throughout the body, rather than on one part as a safety belt would do.
- All devices must meet government standards.
When to wear a Fall Arrest System?
- Whenever there is a potential risk of someone falling, from any height, a fall arrest system must be securely worn.
- When working outside of the handrails on equipment.
Why wear a Fall Arrest System?
- A simple device such as a fall arrest system could potentially save your life.
Where to tie off?
- A fall arrest system must be tied off so a person can only free fall up to six feet, while not touching the level below.
- The anchor point must be able to withstand 5400 pounds.
- Ensure you follow local government standards.
- Always use a locking snap hook that is designed for tying off.
Other Safety Tips
- Inspect all lanyards, lifelines, and harnesses before each use.
- Always plan where you will anchor from before starting work.
- Do not tie knots in lifelines or lanyards.
- When using eyebolt connections, be cautious as the strength of an eyebolt is reduced immensely when pressure is applied at an angle.
- Try to work directly beneath the anchor point to avoid swinging.
